McConnell and BushTrying To Scare Kentuckians Into Writing A Blank Check — No Questions Asked, Please!

Shawn Dixon September 22nd, 2008

During the course of his career Mitch McConnell has taken over $3.6 Million from the banking industry. Now McConnell owes his banker friends a favor and he is asking Kentuckians to pull out their checkbooks and pay them back on his behalf. As Mark Hebert noted earlier this week, an independent group has found that McConnell has accepted millions in campaign cash from Wall St. banks during his four terms as a U.S. senator. That’s why it’s no surprise that Mitch McConnell is calling on congress to quickly pass the $1 trillion bailout, with almost no oversight and no real incentive for Wall Street to tackle its problem of corruption, for his friends in the financial industry

Using the same type of scare tactics and fear mongering he used in the run up to the Iraq War, McConnell is once again asking taxpayers and voters to cede power to him and George W. Bush without asking questions.

McConnell, trying to scare Americans into accepting the administrations plan without asking questions and leaving the the executive totally unaccountable, compared the American economy to a burning house.

Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican leader, said that when you’re house is on fire, you don’t stop and ask the firemen for smoke detectors. “You want them to put out the fire,” McConnell said this afternoon.

Politico also documented McConnell’s “shoot now, ask questions later” strategy for the bailout.

“There will be more questions about this plan. I have many myself,” he said. “But we owe it to the American people to do our due diligence quickly and to act swiftly, Democrats and Republicans alike, to contain this crisis before it’s too late.”

Well then Senator McConnell, if there are questions to be asked, when will they be asked? After the passage of the $1 trillion bailout? I, for one, don’t think Kentuckians or the rest of America is ready to fall for that trick again. The last time the last time McConnell and Bush asked for power from Americans and asked us to trust them, they recklessly led us into a quagmire which will cost the country as much as $3 trillion.

Later in his interview with Politico, McConnell claimed that the bailout package as it is protects folks on Main Street. McConnell insults voters when he makes such outlandish claims. In its current form, the plan actually asks Main Street to clean up the mess made on Wall Street. The bailout package being proposed by the Bush administration asks taxpayers to buy up all the bad investments that Wall Street has made. Essentially the government is asking to write off Wall Street’s losses on the backs of the American taxpayer.

While I agree that something has to be done, writing a blank check to the administration is not the answer. As it currently stands, the bailout package for Wall Street is a complete gift to corporate America with no strings attached. As Paul Krugman pointed out in today’s New York Times, the plan passes the already failed risk to the taxpayer, while all the profit will remain on Wall Street.

The plan being proposed by Bush and supported by Mitch McConnell, as it is, is absolutely unacceptable. I said a few days ago this financial situation would be a real test of McConnell’s leadership. It’s now clear he will continue his pattern of failed leadership.

Mitch McConnell just doesn’t get it. He is once again asking Kentuckians to write a blank check to him and the Bush administration. We’ve seen this show, folks. And it won’t end well this time either — if we let him get away with it.

Senator Mitch McConnell’s Best Friend, George Bush Shows His Contempt For Seniors And The Military With His Veto Pen!!

Jim Pence July 15th, 2008

President Bush vetoed a bill blocking Medicare and Tricare pay cuts to doctors, but congress tells him to go to Hell and overrides the veto. The House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly by a 383-41 vote to override President Bush’s veto and the Senate vote was 70-26 .
Senators Mitch McConnell and Jim Bunning continued to show their disdain for seniors and the military and voted to uphold the George Bush’ veto!
This time next year I hope George W. Bush is living on his 100,000 acres in Paraguay because he won’t be welcomed here in the United States by seniors like me! He can hire Blackwater to protect him from the International Courts that will surely indict him for crimes against humanity , and George will find a good supply of cocaine in Paraguay to sniff up his nose and plenty of room to go hunting with "Shotgun" Dick Cheney!
I can’t wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Bush Legacy Tour, A James Pence Video

Jim Pence June 27th, 2008

[I'm posting this on behalf of Jim Pence.]

The “Bush Legacy Tour” bus came to Louisville, Ky. yesterday and I had the opportunity to shoot some video and take a few photos.

I put together the video below for folks that won’t have the chance to see the Bush Legacy Tour bus in person, so they would have an idea of what it looked like and what was about.

The video below is set to the music of “Takin My Country Back” by The Honky Tonkers For Truth.

Quick Hit: Drilling Is A Fraud!

Terri Whitehouse June 19th, 2008

I guess some people think that if you repeat a lie long enough, it becomes magically true. Click here to learn why the Bush/McCain/McConnell energy “plan” is a great big FAIL!

UPDATE: And Krugman for the TKO:

Mr. McCain has now aligned himself with an administration that, even aside from its blame-the-environmental-movement tendencies, has established an extensive track record as the gang that couldn’t think straight about energy policy.

Remember, they didn’t just insist that the Iraqis would welcome us as liberators; on the eve of the Iraq war, administration officials were also adamant that regime change in Iraq would add millions of barrels a day to the world oil supply, driving oil prices way down. (In fact, Iraq’s oil output took five years just to recover to preinvasion levels.)

So why would Mr. McCain associate himself with these characters? The answer, presumably, is that it’s a cynical political calculation.

How can anyone really delude themselves into trusting Bush/McCain/McConnell/and the ever-desperate Northup on energy policy? All the sugar in the world wouldn’t make that snake oil go down!

Sluuuuuuuurp!

Lee Iacocca Bashes Bush In New Book

Jim Pence April 21st, 2008

(Cross posted at Hillbilly Report)

The Detroit News
Ex-Chrysler CEO also rips Congress, but the harshest criticism goes to president’s leadership.
Washington - Lee Iacocca, author of the original business management best-seller, is giving President Bush an “F” in leadership.
The former Chrysler CEO - who supported Bush’s first campaign in 2000 but backed Sen. John Kerry four years later - accuses Bush of leading the nation to war “on a pack of lies” and lacking the basic components of good leadership.
The book, co-written by New York journalist Catherine Whitney, comes 23 years after Iacocca’s best-selling autobiography “Iacocca,” which reshaped the way the publishing industry viewed business books. USA Today recently ranked the book among the 25 most influential among publishers and readers over the past 25 years.
In addition to politics, Iacocca weighs in on his experiences at Chrysler and the future of the U.S. auto industry in typically blunt fashion.
His latest broadside is in character, said Matthew Seeger, chairman of the communication department of Wayne State University and author of a book on Iacocca’s speeches.
“As he’s gotten older, he’s gotten more blunt, more willing to take stands on issues,” Seeger said.
But tough words from Iacocca may not carry the same weight they once did, said David Cole, director of the Center for Automotive Research at the University of Michigan.
“Some people might have some awfully harsh criticism of Lee Iacocca, too,” Cole said.
Despite his stature as the savior of Chrysler in the 1980s, Cole said, other events, including his failed bid with Kirk Kerkorian to take over the company in the 1990s, have diminished his clout.
Iacocca has described himself as a political independent, and his new book is the latest twist in political history that includes a brief flirtation with his own run for president. He had a close relationship with Democrat Gov. James Blanchard and President Reagan during his time at Chrysler; he made ads for President Bush in 2000 but made campaign appearances with Kerry four years later; and he made more ads, this time for GOP gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos, last year.
“Am I the only guy in this country who’s fed up with what’s happening?” Iacocca writes. “Where the hell is our outrage? We should be screaming bloody murder. We’ve got a gang of clueless bozos steering our ship of state right over a cliff, we’ve got corporate gangsters stealing us blind, and we can’t even clean up after a hurricane much less build a hybrid car. But instead of getting mad, everyone sits around and nods their heads when the politicians say, ‘Stay the course.’”
Disdain for Washington is nothing new from Iacocca, said Gerald Meyers, former chairman of American Motors and a business professor at the University of Michigan. Recalling a trip to talk to lawmakers in the 1970s about the Clean Air Act, Meyers said, Iacocca had little regard for politicians.
“Zero respect. Nada. No respect whatsoever,” Meyers said.
Iacocca has tough things to say about Congress, corporate America, the press and even the voters who put the nation’s current leadership in power. But his harshest criticism is saved for Bush.
He savages Bush’s famous determination: “George Bush prides himself on never changing, even as the world around him is spinning out of control. God forbid someone should accuse him of flip-flopping,” Iacocca writes. “There’s a disturbingly messianic fervor to his certainty.”
He accuses Bush of substituting macho for courage: “Swagger isn’t courage. Tough talk isn’t courage. Courage in the twenty-first century doesn’t mean posturing and bravado. Courage is a commitment to sit down at the negotiating table and talk.”
And he scoffs at Bush’s business-degree background: “Thanks to our first MBA President, we’ve got the largest deficit in history, Social Security is on life support, and we’ve run up a half-a-trillion-dollar price tag (so far) in Iraq. And that’s just for starters.”
White House spokesman Alex Conant said he had not seen the book. “We don’t do book reviews at the White House,” he said.
Simon & Schuster says the book will also include Iacocca’s thoughts on how U.S. businesses can compete with rising economies in China and India. And he calls for government action to address the massive health care costs facing the Detroit’s automakers and other U.S. businesses.
“Name me an industry leader who is thinking creatively about how we can restore our competitive edge in manufacturing,” he writes. “Who would have believed that there could ever be a time when ‘the Big Three’ referred to Japanese car companies?

Bush Administration: Law-Breakers

Terri Whitehouse April 21st, 2008

So says the New York Times:

The Bush administration violated federal law last year when it restricted states’ ability to provide health insurance to children of middle-income families, and its new policy is therefore unenforceable, lawyers from the Government Accountability Office said Friday.

And I think it’s pretty clear what is at the heart of the matter:

The letter told states what steps they needed to take to be sure the children’s health program would not displace or “crowd out” private coverage under group health plans. The White House cited the policy as a justification for rejecting a proposal by New York State to cover 70,000 additional youngsters.

Remember back when Sen. Mitch McConnell pretended to give a flip about middle income families? That dog don’t hunt. Aren’t you ready to DITCH MITCH?!?!

LOOKING BACK

Jim Pence March 18th, 2008

September 10, 2002 as George W. Bush was firing up the United States of America to invade Iraq I wrote the following letter to the the editor and it was published in the News Enterprise.
Now I believe it’s time to hold the whole bunch, Democrats and Republicans, accountable!!!!!!
I was right then and I believe I’m right now.

My September 10, 2002 Letter To The Editor
Don’t trample the Constitution
The Constitution of the United States of America: Article 1 Section 8. The Congress shall have power to declare war, grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal, and make rules concerning captures on land and water; To raise and support armies, but no appropriation of money to that use shall be for a longer term than two years; To make rules for the Government and regulation of the land and naval forces.

Congress has the power to declare war. If a president of the United States invades another country, without war being declared by Congress, I feel the president would be in violation of his or her oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States of America and, in the opinion of this writer, should subject to impeachment. If Congress allows the president to invade another country, without declaring war, and continues to finance the effort, in the opinion of this writer, the members of Congress would be in violation of their oaths to uphold the constitution and should be dealt with accordingly.

Our country is debating whether to invade Iraq or not to invade Iraq. I really don’t have enough information to have an opinion one way or another, but I do know what the Constitution requires. If we invade another country, it requires Congress to declare war. To do anything less would be a violation of our constitution and a violation of the law. It’s really very simple: if another country invaded us, we would consider it an act of war. Therefore, if we invade another country we should have the guts to call it what it is, an act of war, and to call it anything less would be shameful and a lie. Is it possible Congress will let the president do whatever he wants concerning Iraq, including invasion, without declaring war, and violate their oaths to uphold the one thing that keeps us bound together as a nation, our Constitution? I am here to predict they will and I further predict they will get away with it and they may even give themselves a raise for doing such a good job! Ho-hum, so what’s new? After all, it is just the Constitution.

No Banker Left Behind

Terri Whitehouse March 15th, 2008

There is an excellent post on Greg Palast’s blog linking the Eliot Spitzer scandal with the recent bailout of Bear Stearns:

It was the night of February 13 when Spitzer made the bone-headed choice to order take-out in his Washington Hotel room. He had just finished signing these words for the Washington Post about predatory loans:

“Not only did the Bush administration do nothing to protect consumers, it embarked on an aggressive and unprecedented campaign to prevent states from protecting their residents from the very problems to which the federal government was turning a blind eye.”

Bush, Spitzer said right in the headline, was the “Predator Lenders’ Partner in Crime.” The President, said Spitzer, was a fugitive from justice. And Spitzer was in Washington to launch a campaign to take on the Bush regime and the biggest financial powers on the planet.

Spitzer wrote, “When history tells the story of the subprime lending crisis and recounts its devastating effects on the lives of so many innocent homeowners the Bush administration will not be judged favorably.”

But now, the Administration can rest assured that this love story – of Bush and his bankers - will not be told by history at all – now that the Sheriff of Wall Street has fallen on his own gun.

It looks like Gov. Spitzer wasn’t the only one getting screwed.

Say WHAT?!?!?

Terri Whitehouse March 14th, 2008

Listen, folks. I know you probably think I’m a big mouth who would never dream of censoring myself, but, really, I do. All the time. Usually, when I write my posts, I have a lot more words under my hat, about half of which are expletives. And it’s hard to reign them in sometimes.

So when President Silver Spoon says this kind of shit, know that I’m biting my tongue so damn hard, it’s a wonder how I’m not tasting blood. Because while President Coke Sniffer was getting drunk and skipping out on his guard duty, some people of his generation were actually “confronting danger.” And while President Dry Drunk was granting permission for Junior Silver Spoon to marry his daughter, some people of my generation were actually “confronting danger.”

And speaking of cowards, well, my opinion of Sen. Mitch McConnell isn’t much different. I’m aghast that some people are so out of touch with reality, living the bourgie life inside the beltway, that they’d have the audacity to udder “war is peace”, without so much as a hint of irony.

These are the assholes that are running this country. Can you even believe it? All that, and only three cuss words. Amazing.

Mavericks? Methinks Not.

Mitch McConnell is a Bush Republican

Joe Sonka January 25th, 2008

(crossposted at BlueGrassRoots)

Yes, we all know that Mitch McConnell is a Bush Republican, but let's just take a trip down memory lane to past State of the Union addresses for even more proof. Here's Mitch in full kissing-Bush's-ass mode:

2002: McConnell: Bush Exceeded the High Expectations for SOTU in 2002, Honored to Work With Bush. In response to Bush’s 2002 State of the Union address McConnell said, “Expectations were high after President Bush's last address to Congress, and tonight he exceeded those very high expectations. I am honored to work with the president to win the war on terrorism and revitalize our economy. It's clear why the American people love this guy: He shoots straight, and his heart's in the right place.” [Gannet News Service, 1/30/02]

2004: McConnell: Bush Stated the “Obvious” War on Terror “Going Well” and “Economy Booming.” In response to Bush’s 2004 State of the Union address McConnell said, “He stated the obvious: The war on terror is going well and the economy is booming, and America is headed in the right direction on both fronts.” When asked if that sounded like a re-election slogan, he replied, “It does to me.” [Courier Journal, 1/21/04]

2005: McConnell Looked Forward to Helping Bush Achieve Goals Laid out in 2005 State of the Union. In response to Bush’s 2005 State of the Union address McConnell said, “President Bush did an outstanding job articulating his domestic and foreign policy goals for the next four years. He vowed to work with Congress to reform the government to ensure that our country is stronger and more secure for our children and grandchildren. As Majority Whip, I look forward to helping the President achieve these goals.” [McConnell Release, 2/2/05]

2006: McConnell: Bush Gave an Outstanding Speech Filled with Optimism. In response to Bush’s 2006 State of the Union address, McConnell said, “President Bush gave an outstanding speech tonight filled with optimism for the future and a determination to tackle the challenges that lie ahead. The President has led America through difficult times. Tonight he demonstrated he is still leading America, as he laid out a bold agenda to move our nation forward.” [McConnell Release, 1/31/06]

Additionally, Americans United for Change delivered "I’m a Bush Republican" buttons to all House and Senate Republicans in advance of Bush’s State of the Union Address with the message: "your votes helped build his legacy; you should show your support for him by proudly declaring that you’re a Bush Republican."

Hope to see you proudly wearing your pin, Mitch!

He Got 935 Problems, But A War Ain’t One

Terri Whitehouse January 23rd, 2008

The AP is reporting that the Bush administration issued nearly 1,000 false statements about national security in the two years after the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001:

The study concluded that the statements “were part of an orchestrated campaign that effectively galvanized public opinion and, in the process, led the nation to war under decidedly false pretenses.”

As far as I’m concerned, it’s just another statement of the bleeding obvious. But still, it gives me a massive headache this morning. Doesn’t Sen. Mitch McConnell know that ignoring something doesn’t make it go away? Time to send him packing so he and his BFF George W. Bush can have more free time together next year.

George W. Bush: Mitch McConnell’s BFF

Joe Sonka January 15th, 2008

(crossposted at BlueGrassRoots)

Congressional Quarterly just released its annual ratings of Presidential support by members of Congress, and guess who was right up there near the top? Our boy, Mitch McConnell.

In 2007, McConnell backed President Bush's policy position 86% of the time, just shy of John Cornyn at #1 with 91%. That would be the same President Bush who has a 37% approval rating and a 61% disapproval rating in Kentucky. The same Presidnet Bush who's approval rating hasn't cracked 42% in KY in the last 16 months.

Kentuckians want change, and they don't want someone who rubber stamps whatever a failure like George W. Bush wants. Nor do they want to re-elect a Senator who describes Bush this way.

Mitch McConnell of Kentucky called Bush "one of the great presidents in the history of the United States."

The campaign commercials just write themselves, don't they?
