Matt Gunterman is a graduate student in the Department of History at Yale University, where he is completing his Ph.D. in the History of Science & Medicine. In 2006, he stood for election as judge/executive in his native McLean County, Kentucky. He took a three-candidate Democratic primary with 53 percent of the vote, and was defeated in the general election, where he took 49 percent against a Republican seeking his fourth term. Matt ran an aggressively progressive campaign in this rural county, and his performance there convinced him that Kentuckians were hungering for an alternative to the slash-and-burn methods of the uninspiring McConnell.
