Mitch McConnell’s War

Mitch McConnell, Six months ago today (or 1 FU), 3/20/2007:
WASHINGTON- Four years into the Iraq war, all sides in the bitter debate agree that President Bush’s “troop surge” plan represents the final drop of American patience for the war. If Iraqis fail to control the violence, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said, “The American taxpayer has a reasonable expectation that we will bring our people home.”
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who has steadfastly supported the mission, said Republicans’ patience is nearly exhausted, too.
“This is the last chance for the Iraqis,” the Kentucky Republican said in an interview with The Examiner. “The last chance for them to step up and demonstrate that they can do their part to save their country.”
And six months later, with even more US troops thrown into the meatgrinder, the Iraqi government takes a monthlong vacation and doesn’t manage to meet almost all of the benchmarks set out for it. This was the entire justification for the surge, for political progress and reconciliation to take hold, and it has failed miserably.
The “last chance” that Mitch talks about will never be the “last chance”. There will always be the next Freidman Unit ahead in the future. Mitch McConnell will allow this failed policy to go on as long as he holds a seat in the Senate. Mitch McConnell will filibuster any attempt to restore proper troop rotation as long as we lack 60 votes in the Senate (as he did yesterday).
This is YOUR war, Mitch.
And Kentuckians will know this next November. You can count on that.
