The Republican TVA Row
Matt Gunterman March 16th, 2007
Just a few words before I head on out about the row breaking out between Republican Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee and Senators Mitch McConnell and Jim Bunning of Kentucky of the latter two’s bill to privatize the TVA. The Gannett News Service’s Bill Theobald has this quote from Sen. Alexander, saying that “make it more difficult to attract good jobs to Tennessee, and actually deprive Kentuckians of a future option for reliable, low-cost power.”
See, Sen. Alexander, you’re learning an important lesson here about the nature of Sen. McConnell (and let’s be real, that’s who we’re talking about here) that we Kentuckians know all too well because we live with the man. Mitch is in the pocket of the corporate interests that fund his political machine. His corporate interests want this done, therefore he does it. Mitch doesn’t care about jobs in Tennessee because no Tennessean will ever cast a vote to elect Mitch to anything. Displeasing the people of the Volunteer State impacts his power not one iota. And, finally, Mitch could care less if poor and working class Kentuckians have access to low-cost power in the future because, well, he could care less about the poor and working class.
Sen. Alexander, you once upon a time fashioned yourself as the original compassionate conservative. You see, to be fair, Sen. McConnell never made any claims about having a heart or moral compass. Lay off the android, OK?

This is, in fact, the perfect time to go after Mitch McConnell–as it may be the only time. We have a perfect candidate in eastern Kentucky–Rocky Adkins. Rocky is not only the most popular politician in eastern Kentucky, he is well thought of throughout the state. Also, Rocky has the support of one of the most successful and popular mayors in Kentucky–Steve Gilmore of Ashland. The problem is that Rocky is not a millionaire (I don’t think) and would need lots of help financially. W has already been to KY doing a fund-raiser for McConnell. It seems to me that people from TN, KY and the nation can all benefit from a candidate who would actually have an excellent chance of beating Mitch. I just wonder if enough people are interested. If anyone is interested in talking about this, contact Bob Reynolds, PhD drbobsoffice_63@yahoo.com.
Let’s try to do something for America besides talk.
