SUSA: Mitch McConnell approval/disapproval at 50/43 in August

Matt Gunterman August 21st, 2007

Not much movement for Senator Mitch McConnell (R) in the latest Survey USA numbers, especially when you consider that he’s been on recess, traveling the state, and making numerous public appearances (in very controlled environments and to very friendly crowds–with the exception of Fancy Farm, which was a must for him). McConnell’s been tauting his record hard in the press across the state, and what does he get? Statistically insignificant movement, that’s what.

McConnell’s approval/disapproval stood at 50/43 in August after plunging to a record low approval and record high disapproval last month of 48/44.

Where’s the significant movement?

Well, among males, McConnell saw a noted decline from 53/42 in July to 49/46 in August.

And, among females, he saw a noted improvement from 44/46 to 51/40.

In July, McConnell saw the opposite effect: he improved among men and declined among women.

McConnell’s numbers among Republicans improved a bit, but went back to recent trend levels after a slight dip last month. In short, the immigration debate is over and the bad taste of it must be fading a bit among the base. In August, McConnell is at 77/22.

There was no real movement among Democrats or Independents.

There was not much change among Conservatives and Moderates, but there was a bit of improvement among Liberals, and God only knows why, since an informed Liberal should know that McConnell is obstructing the SCHIP bill to expand health care to children and is fighting to take away civil liberties. Anyway, his numbers among that groups were 69/27 in July and they’re 60/33 this month.

McConnell’s numbers improved significantly in Western Kentucky from 53/37 in July to 62/30 in August, and they also improved in Eastern Kentucky where McConnell’s made a concerted effort to improve his image as of late. There he went from 42/53 in July to 49/47 in August.

They stayed steady in Louisville, but fell significantly in North Central Kentucky from 51/40 in July to 45/45 in August.
