Ed Whitfield: Fighting to Keep Michael Vick Off the Football Field for Western Kentuckians
Shawn Dixon July 27th, 2007
On this slow-news-Friday, I thought we should take some of the heat off poor Senator McConnell for the day and highlight some of Kentucky’s other shining elected officials.
Let’s take a look at Kentucky’s first congressional district, my home, which is represented by Congressman Ed Whitfield.
Ed Whitfield is a simple man has a lot more political ambition than vision for Western Kentucky. While the Republicans were in the majority in the House, the congressman managed to keep a safe re-election status because of his ability to bring home pork. Now, while his seniority still allows him some of that privilege, his ability to bring home the dollars is not at the level it once was.
Given that Whitfield’s votes ALWAYS toe the Republican Partly line and he really has offered no plans or vision for rural America or Western Kentucky, I often wonder, with Whitfield now in the minority party in Congress what is he doing to keep himself relevant these days? Reforming the broken healthcare system? Nope. Thinking of ways to train workers and revitalize our rural communities? Guess again. Proposing solutions to make education more affordable? Hardly.
Today we get a glimpse. Congressman Whitfield is working hard issuing press releases to try to keep Michael Vick, professional football players accused of dog fighting, off the football field.
In a recent letter to the commissioner of football Whitfield asked that Vick not be allowed to play. I know this may come as a shock, but Mr. Vick is not from Western Kentucky nor does he play in Western Kentucky’s non-existent football league. Never mind the fact that the NFL has already put him on probation, does Whitfield even have a dog in this fight? (pun intended)
Given his complete lack of conviction for helping Western Kentuckians, I’m glad to see that the Congressman at least has some priorities.

Having grown up with ‘Mr.Ed’, I can understand how he got sidetracked by the issue of professional football in football crazy western Kentucky. Yep them Tigers from Hop-town & the Braves from Morgan-Patch grow-up to vote and he sure wants to be ‘fresh in their minds’ come votin’ day - just thank whut they’d do iff’n he stank.
My apologies for the syn-tax to all who wouldn’t vote for him.

It’s no secret that “Special Ed” is not just a dog lover, but a dog obsesser. And you just know that, with all the pain and suffering that western Kentuckians experience on a daily basis, what upset Little Eddie most that one day was the abuse of dogs. Abuse of humans by the health care industry is okay because that fits within a nice little conservative ideological framework, but violence against dogs: NEVER!
Plus, it doesn’t hurt that Vick is African American and Ed Whitfield is a flaming racist.
On this one - as a practising football official - I agree with the commish … no reporting.
On the brighter side, though … If a person wishing to be an official has a conviction for almost anything other than parking or minor moving violations, certainly no PI, or DUI, or feloniy, he is not eligible to officiate. So why, I ask, do we allow convicted felons to play?
Regardless of color.
