The Three Stooges of the KY GOP: Grayson, Fletcher, & McConnell (video)
Matt Gunterman July 3rd, 2007
This video (from reader and YouTuber jasonedwardalbert) nicely encapsulates the duplicity, incompetence, and infighting of the Kentucky GOP as embodied in the twisted and acrimonious relationships between Kentucky Secretary of State Trey Grayson (R), Governor Ernie Fletcher (R), and Senator Mitch McConnell (R).
Essentially, it presents Trey Grayson’s full-scale adoption of Karl Rove’s agenda of disenfranchisement in the context of his political ambition, which culminated in his surprise announcement last summer at Fancy Farm ‘06 that he was considering a run for governor (I was there for the announcement and have always wondered if Grayson would have had the balls to make the announcement if Fletcher had had the balls to show up at Fancy Farm).
That speech on Saturday, 05 August 2006 likely represents the peak of Grayson’s political career: a time when he had the political gumption to declare himself a viable primary opponent to a sitting Republican governor in a party that is itself still the minority one in the state. It’s been all downhill since then, quite frankly. Grayson was forced to stick his tail between his legs and quickly retreat and he — like Anne Northup, Republicans in the U.S. Senate, and President George W. Bush — soon learned that McConnell’s only loyalty is to his own political ass.
Anyway, this video has a great soundtrack and it provides a detailed reminder and cited account of how the whole sordid state of the Kentucky GOP evolved.
