McConnell: Fund the Troops in Iraq, Cut Their Funding When They Get Home

Shawn Dixon May 17th, 2007

Today Senate Democrats passed the first fiscally responsible budget since 2001, when Congress, with Senator Mitch McConnell’s leadership as the number two Senate Republican, decided to abandon pay-as-you-go budget rules in order to adopt Bush’s tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans.

Besides balancing the budget in 5 years, the new budget would increase spending for our nation’s Veterans, including healthcare. (Remember Walter Reed, Senator McConnell?) Additionally, the budget would increase spending on children and education.

Mitch McConnell doesn’t support the new budget, which had the support of some of his Republican colleagues, because the resolution would allow Bush’s reckless tax cuts for the rich to expire. The Senator’s office put out a press release this afternoon saying he voted against the measure because it would mean a tax increase on “hard-working Americans.” Since the Democrat’s budget actually keeps tax cuts in place for all middle class Americans and only eliminates tax cuts on the rich, one can quickly deduce who Mitch McConnell considers to be hard-working!

McConnell knows that rich campaign coffers helped him win office and he owes it to them to keep up his “hard work” for the richest Americans, even if it means cutting funding for those who bravely served our country.

Maybe we should call him Mitch “We’ll Pay for the Plane Ride There ” McConnell.
