McConnell Resorts to Fear Mongering, Tired Rhetoric
Shawn Dixon April 26th, 2007
I want to point you to this headline from WBKO, a TV station from Bowling Green. Though I am from western Kentucky, I have never heard of WBKO (I grew up on WPSD), but I like the way they write their headlines: without rhetoric and to the point.
After Senator McConnell’s vote against a Senate bill to fund the troops and set a timeline for withdrawal in Iraq, the station led their story with “McConnell Wants To Stay In Iraq.” That is telling it like it is! Thank goodness for no spin! McConnell has become the leading advocate for staying in Iraq without a plan for success while leaving our troops in harms way. Unfortunately for him, most Kentuckians oppose his vote today.
What is worse, Senator McConnell shamelessly tried to defend his vote by fear mongering and using the Bush administration’s tired line tying Iraq to the 9-11 attacks.
The Republican senate minority leader insists that a troop pullout would make the United States more vulnerable to another Al-Qaida attack.
Sad to see that Senator McConnell is more beholden to the Republican party line than the will of Kentucky voters. He’ll regret it next November.

Did you notice earlier this week that there was a headline on DrudgeReport that said, and I paraphrase, “Osama bin Laden calling shots in Afghanistan and Iraq.” I’m sure that headline was a Bush administration and that the plan to go forward is to try and “re-establish” Iraq as the frontline of the “war on terror.” Right now, the American people are fully understanding that Al-Qaida isn’t a major player or presence in Iraq at all (and it never has been, of course). This conflict is a civil war and if there’s any external parties involved it’s Iraq’s neighbors — and the United States. Anyway, I just don’t see how the Bush administration and McConnell can get that genie back in the bottle. Once people know what the war’s really all about, how are you going to re-convince them of your original lie?
This is certainly a sign of GOP desperation.
Honestly, given McConnell’s track record of looking out for number one and stabbing Republican colleagues in the back to do it (see Ernie Fletcher)it can only be a matter of time before he “cuts and runs” from the failed White House PR strategies.
Fortunately, it will be too late.
