DOES THE KENTUCKY DEMOCRATIC PARTY CARE ABOUT KENTUCKY’S 1ST CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT???????
Jim Pence February 1st, 2008
I am very disappointed that Steve Beshear would ask someone to run for the U.S. Senate, last December while leaving Kentucky’s 1st congressional District without a candidate.
This action and inaction begs for answers:
- Will the KDP endorse Ed Whitfield this November?
- Why didn’t the KDP find a Democratic candidate for Kentucky’s 1st Congressional District?
- Will the KDP support the Democratic candidate for Kentucky’s 1st Congressional District or let her wither on the vine?
- Will Sen. Charles Schumer of New York and Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada support the Democratic candidate for Kentucky’s 1st Congressional District?
The list of questions I have is far too long to for me to write here, but it seems to me that the KDP is not willing to fight for Kentucky’s 1st Congressional District and the message I get from this is: When a person and or an organization is not willing to fight for what they believe in, then they don’t really believe in anything.
The the Congressional race in Kentucky’s 1st Congressional District will tell us if the KDP is willing to fight for what they believe in. I hope they are up for the fight. It would be very disappointing to find that they are just a bunch of chickenshits that don’t believe in anything.

Both the Democratic and Republican Parties of Kentucky should have a responsibility to field and run candidates in every election in the state. Democracy/Republic government is all about giving the people a choice.
Even in the case of the Fifth Congressional District, where Hal Rogers runs every two years and usually wins in landslide numbers, it is important to make sure the voters have a decision to make. I don’t like to see any politician run unopposed.
It seems like since 1994, the KDP has given up on the First. Only committing to one or two “competitive” districts makes no sense. I wrote a letter to the KDP asking them to wake up and take notice that someone is actually running in the First.
I’m sure it was a letter that went unread.
As much as I, myself, criticize the KDP, it’s a bit premature to complain about November. While it’s likely that there’s no way the KDP will assist Heather Ryan, we should still give them the opportunity to screw up first.
And, it *is* a shame no one bothered to recruit someone for the 1st. Or the 4th. And it’s an even bigger shame that strong arming is taking place to convince worthy candidates to drop out of their respective races.
They know it’s a waste of time. Whitfield is widely popular in the first district.
The Democrat’s have had some quality candidates in the past. Clint Alexander, Brian Roy, Dennis Null all tried but fell into the same trap as did Tom Barlow hoping and counting on the promises of the DNC to deliver. Barlow waited to late to fundraise and the DNC did not come through. Until we stop predicating our support on polling which I think is flawed most times in the First and just get behind a candidate–all out and organize for a change, then things will remain the same. Whitfield has been smart to stay in Washington and California and out of local politics so he retains his popularity. My opinion and it is just one opinion believe we need someone young with a name and the ability to be viable. Many of us have asked Madisonville Mayor William M. “Will” Cox Jr. to consider the race next time and he has said that he would consider it. His father is Revenue Commissioner and served in the Carter Administration and his Grandfather was a State Legislator from Madisonville so he has about 50 years of family in politics and government in the First. He does not need and introduction to most folks.Having grown up in Congressional politics in the first and worked professionally for 7 candidates who either ran for the office, considered running and having served on Barlow’s staff I can say that the timing is not real good at present. With the lack of projects and jobs dished out or lack of to the First, Whitfield and McConnell’s people are going around saying “we told you so, now we let you have your fun in the Governors race now it’s time to come home to those who deliver the bacon.” Anyone who can win knows they can’t count on the KDP or the DNC because there is just not much of a track record for support. I believe there are more registered Democrats in the First then any other Congressional District, ya think we could have done better. Tim
Roy and Alexander both had the funds. Whitfield is unbeatable… He’s done a great job for the first district.

WOW! SDH, explain to me what kind of “great job” this carpet-bagger has done?!
I haven’t seen it! As such, with “who” I know in Beshear’s cabinent, I’m sure I can throw a little muscle for Heather Ryan in her quest to unseat Whitfield.
Whitfield can be beat, as any incumbent can, it just takes a grassroot effort. Anybody who is a Democrat needs to get behind Heather Ryan and support her and I’m not talking “lip service” either. It will take a concentrated effort.
Thanks for covering the First Hillbilly!! It is greatly appreciated!! We simply have to fight for this district. They never put up a fight here and haven’t in a long time.
I have already talked to Heather and hope to help her a bunch!! If we all get behind her we can show them this district is worth fighting for again.
Heather has a actblue page up,I’m taking pictures today for her website

Where does EXXON Eddie live? In the 1st District? Just curious.
no one knows!!! it’s a secret may have to build a house on that empty lot
#12 do you enjoy lying? He has a house in Hopkinsville.
I live in Hopkinsville, that’ where I post from. Not sure where you are getting this, “NY IP” stuff.
Lastly, Exxon eddie and his trips?
I believe he has taken fewer trips than any other congress person from KY. Even fewer than your boy Pol. ben.
He’s done a great job, and he’ll be re-elected again, and again, and again until he wants to retire.
graves co
#13 SDH; Ed’s address in Hopkinsville is his parent’s house; everyone knows that. Unless you consider his parent’s place his place, as if he’s a teenager, I would hardly say he “has a house in Hopkinsville”.
Again, another Repug trying to defend their boy by begging the question. “I believe he has taken fewer trips than any other congress person from KY.” That doesn’t make it RIGHT SDH - it just makes him as much of a jerk as every other congress person who flies off to destination X on our dime or at the expense of their special interest buddies. Special Interest Eddie is Exhibit A in Special Interest Do-Nothing Congress Members. The truth hurts, I know, but I have stock in Kleenex, so guy buy a box …
The truth is that the Dems know they can’t win back this once strong Democratic district. Their old “Rock of Gibralter” has stuck to their moral views and thus will now only vote for Republicans after the disgrace of Bill Clinton and his liberal base.
I’d say the Dems will be wise to put all their money into the 2nd district where they won’t face an incumbent.
And Alexander, Roy, Null, and “Run Again” Barlow were all jokes who were easily beaten. Didn’t Alexander always say he was laying groundwork in his campaign for the next time around? I guess his beatdown was bad enough he had nothing left for this time.
