On the Ground in Iowa

Shawn Dixon December 29th, 2007

Sorry for my lack of posts over the past few months. I may have started my first semester of law school with a somewhat naïve estimate of the amount of time it would require. But, finals are over and after spending some quality time at home in Western Kentucky for the holidays, I’m in Iowa today volunteering for the John Edwards campaign until the January 03, caucuses. I decided since Edwards took the time to come and visit us in Columbus, KY, I can give him a few days of my time in Iowa.

I’m working in a town called Ottumwa. It’s not that big of a place, but from what I can tell it has a population about the size of Paducah. Nice, small town feel. If you want to tune in, I am going to try to blog on DMKY every night about the day’s events and what it’s like on the ground in the days leading up to the caucus.

Obviously, I’m inside the bubble here, but I think Edwards has a lot of momentum heading into the final days. There is a lot of excitement around the campaign and he is drawing big crowds – often standing room only.

Anyway this race goes, it’s bad news for McConnell. All of the Dem choices for President are strong and no matter who is on the top of the ticket, Kentuckians won’t soon forget McConnell’s failed leadership.

Stay tuned.

Go Shawn! It’s anyone’s race. You’re right - McConnell is in trouble no matter who our nominee is, but an Edwards victory would be especially great for Kentucky Democrats.

You go Shawn! Good hearing from you!

BTW a heads up that David Hawpe has another excellent op-ed in the Courier Journal on old Ditch Mitch this Sunday morning! Anyone who can go there and make a comment!

Have a great Sudnay and a Happy New Year!

daily kos has a diary by MissLaura quote “So I want to tip my hat to those members of our community who are acting on their commitment, and especially to those who have taken their vacation time to go to another state, maybe for days on end. I’m going to start with an incomplete list (including those with firm plans) and add names to it as I hear them. I’m not segregating by candidate because, in the end, we’re all on the same team.”

Very exciting race going on. It’s interesting to see the level of organizing that happens all across the state.

I’ll write more about it today if I can. (sadly, I left my laptop charger at the place I’m staying this morning.)

Good luck with the volunteering and the law school, but here’s the real important part of this:

Ottumwa, Iowa, proud home of Radar O’Reiley. In case you didn’t know.

Good onya for putting your bucket where your mouth first went. Wish I could be there setting up caucus partners for Richardson, the complete candidate.

I’m predicting Edwards, Obama, and the Clinton. Perhaps I’m biased but I think the Edwards momentum will outdo Obama and I’m doubting that Hillary is as popular as the media has relayed. I could be wrong.

I’m guessing Romney, Huckabee, and then Fred. Rudy may want to try one more “I pulled women and children from the WTC 24/7 and transformed NY’s Harlem into an Emerald City” but I think folks have caught on. Again, it’s hard to say as Iowa has historically been full of surprises.
